Historic
Banner Elk Walking Tours Follow a path through the 19th century history
of the small mountain town of Banner Elk,
beginning at the home of one of the founding
families, Samuel Henry Banner. Tour the Banner
House Museum and then rent a CD ($5) for the
self-guided tour that will bring to life Banner Elk history from
the late 1860s to the present. Find out where
horses forded the Elk River, see the
site of the saw and gristmill of the Banners,
and discover the stories behind the stone
buildings on the Lees-McRae campus. You will
leave us with a greater knowledge and
appreciation of Appalachian Mountain history!
The tour, which takes approximately two hours,
covers incredibly beautiful but uneven ground,
steep hills, and the route is about 1.5 miles
long. Wear comfortable shoes and bring your
camera and water.
Tours of the historic district of Banner Elk
leave from the Banner House Museum Tuesday
through Saturday during visitor hours. It is
suggested that you leave no later than 2PM and
return before the museum closes at 4PM.
